About the African American Heritage Project

The Winding River African American Heritage Project brings together, under a single directory, a compilation of historic sites, monuments, memorials, and museum collections related to the African American experience in western Missouri, eastern Kansas, southern Iowa and Nebraska, and parts of northern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

This guide provides families a directory of day trips and weekend getaways that connect African American history across geographic boundaries. This directory focuses on locations with public access and interpretative signage for family visits.

It is far beyond our resources to be as comprehensive as national collections such as Clio or local tours and guides, which we have listed in the Directory and at Additional Sources.
